Breathing Assessment

Respiration involves the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs as well as within every cell of our body.

Many people have developed a poor pattern of breathing that is often undetectable through simple observation. These poor patterns lead to altered respiratory chemistry and can produce a number of physical symptoms:

  • Tightness or discomfort in the chest

  • Shortness of breath

  • Difficulty taking a deep breath

  • Tingling of the skin

  • Cold/sweaty hands

  • Numbness in the fingers or toes

  • Muscle tightness or body tension

  • Light-headedness or dizziness

  • Blurred vision

  • Sighing or gasping

  • Difficulty with concentration

  • Gastrointestinal issues

How is Your Breathing?

If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, you may be over breathing. If this is occurring, it can be effectively treated through the use of biofeedback to retrain an efficient and optimal pattern.

Who Can Benefit from Breathing Retraining Using Capnography Therapy?

People with:

  • High levels of stress

  • Anxiety or Depression

  • Back or neck pain

  • Repetitive strain injuries

  • Persistent or chronic pain

  • Fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue

Often your physiotherapist may feel that your breathing might be an issue, or if you have concerns about your breathing the assessment is simple. A background history of your current condition will be obtained, followed by an objective evaluation looking at breathing mechanics and carbon dioxide levels. This includes using a computerized device to measure your breathing for several minutes. Once this information is obtained, if there appears to be a breathing dysfunction, we can thoroughly explain what is occurring and treatment can commence on the very first visit. Assessment and treatment is performed by a registered physiotherapist with extensive training and experience in capnography.
